Following the model provided by other institutions, I began to develop a cluster of basic skills for all students entering grade 6 (rather than specifying for grade 6, 7, and 8)

Entering Grade 6, students will be able to: (Revised by Marian Bradshaw and Nancy Bell on Dec. 1, 2010)

· Have experience with the five themes of geography
· Differentiate fact, opinion, and reasoned judgment (eg. in the news)
· Complete a research project using a variety of media (books, web, journals, data bases)
· Read and take basic notes from a variety of texts and media sources
· Summarize information (paraphrase)
· Write a complete, coherent paragraph including a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and an concluding sentence
· Be able to formulate and defend a personal opinion.
· Know and be able to use the basic features of a globe, maps, atlases, and digital geographic tools
· Be able to organize their materials and their time (time management)
· Be able to work collaboratively with others
